Speaker placement and room interaction
A well-designed speaker can sound poor in an unsuitable position. Placement changes both the direct sound and the reflections arriving at the listener.
Start with symmetry
For stereo listening:
- Keep left and right speakers in similar acoustic environments.
- Begin with equal distances from the listening position.
- Avoid placing one speaker next to a side wall while the other opens into a large space.
- Keep the tweeters near seated ear height unless the design specifies otherwise.
Distance from boundaries
A wall, floor, or ceiling reflects sound. At low frequencies, nearby boundaries can increase overall output. They can also create cancellations when reflected and direct sound arrive out of phase.
Moving a speaker or listener by a relatively small distance can significantly change bass response.
Toe-in
Toe-in changes:
- Treble level at the listener
- Stereo imaging
- The amount of sound directed toward side walls
- The balance between direct and reflected sound
Speakers with narrow directivity may need more precise aiming. Speakers with broad, smooth directivity may support a wider listening area.
Room modes
At frequencies where room dimensions correspond to half-wavelength relationships, standing waves form.
These create:
- Pressure maxima and minima
- Strong seat-to-seat variation
- Long decay at certain frequencies
Moving the listener is often more effective than applying large boosts to a deep cancellation.
Subwoofer placement
Because bass wavelengths are long, a subwoofer can often be positioned independently from the main speakers.
Multiple subwoofers can reduce seat-to-seat variation when properly placed and integrated.
A practical method
- Begin with geometric symmetry.
- Measure or listen at the intended seat.
- Move speakers and seat in small steps.
- Adjust toe-in.
- Integrate subwoofers.
- Apply moderate EQ only after placement.
- Recheck several listening positions.
